Abstract
Palaeobotanical and chronological studies carried out during the last decades in several sites of the northwest of Portugal let us to make a reconstruction of the landscape evolution during the Holocene in this part of the Iberian Peninsula. Boreal mixed forests (Pinus, Betula) that characterized the landscape of the mountains during the initial phases of this period were progressively substituted by mesophyl1ous and termophyllous formations (Quercus robur, Alnus, Corylus, etc.). The last part of the Holocene reflects an important decrease in forests interpreted as results of an increase in human activity.
