Resumo

Physical performance in team sports (DSEQ) has been widely studied and it has been verified that it falls off as the end of the match approaches. According to both what technicians believe and scientific literature the cause of this decline is attributed to physiological fatigue whether it is peripheral (PF) or central (CF). Because tactical and strategic factors play a large part in physical performance in team sports, it is reasonable to think that the situational variables (location of the match, partial result and the opponent’s level) or the occurrence of critical moments during the game (scoring, winning a half and difference on the scoreboard) can influence physical performance. The main argument can be defended by reviewing several very recent scientific works that demonstrate the importance of some of the variables that could be incorporated into a more pertinent explanation than the prevailing variables. This study establishes that the decline of performance is not only a direct consequence of physiological fatigue. It is possible that the approximate effect of the physiological aspects is greater than the actual existing effect. Some guidelines are suggested when practicing, for example, that the post-match analysis of the physical performance of the teams should be made incorporating the particular characteristics of the situational variables that have become apparent during the match. It is also suggested that if the coach is able to identify the variables of the team’s performance that are negatively influenced by any situational variable/s or critical moment, an endeavour could be made to resolve these variables in particular when preparing subsequent matches. An explanatory model is provided of the relationship between variables and a decline of performance in DSEQ.
