In this research we analyse, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the linguistic attitudes towards Spanish sign languages in the education community, in particular in the stages of elementary and primary education. We have structured the analysis in three parts: in the first one, we have reviewed the current approach to deaf people teaching in order to analyse, on a linguistic basis, certain issues of the educational environment of the deaf child population. In the second part, we have adapted the first models of the European Language Portfolio, in order to enable its implementation in visual-gestural language teaching and to check the possibilities offered by this proposal in Galicia, especially in those educational centres which school sign language users or deaf children. In the third part, we have measured the attitudes towards Spanish sign language and Spanish in order to confirm the influence that families and schools have on the origin, consolidation, and modification of attitudes towards visual-gestural languages. This measurement has also allowed the verification of the usefulness of our ELP version in improving the linguistic attitudes of the entire education community. The results of our study corroborate the importance of addressing linguistic attitudes in a specific way in order to successfully implement school curricula in both spoken and visual-gestural languages.
