Resumo

The Doctoral Thesis “Economic Analysis of the Loss of Productive Factors: Social and Labor Inclusion of the Prison Population of Galicia (Spain)” consists of research into the situation of this population and the main factors involved in achieving their social and labor inclusion in order to reduce social inequality. From a quantitative approach, a study with 380 inmates has been carried out, using a comparative statistical analysis of equality-of-means t-test and ANOVA, and a Structural Equation Model. On the other hand, data collected from in-depth interviews with twenty-two prisoners classified as 'third grade' (semi-freedom) have been analyzed. The importance of education and employment in achieving inclusion has been shown through various analyzes. Therefore, public policies need to promote the following areas: 1) maintaining the financial support to associations and NGOs working in the job search for the inmates while public support policies are implemented 2) developing policies that promote self-employment among this group 3) increasing training, both in general and more specifically in ICT skills, because the lack of knowledge in this area is a new cause of inequality. However, the design of future public policies should not ignore the different profiles of inmates related to the prison experience and employment status as qualitative analysis has suggested.
