Abstract
The mobilization of dissolved organic matter and metal (Al-Fe)-humus complexes in podzols, allow the transport and retention of Hg in deeper soil layers, avoiding contamination of groundwaters. This study analyzes the distri- bution of total Hg (HgT) in the horizons of a forest podzol from NW Spain as a function of soil aggregate size (coarse sand, fine sand, coarse silt, fine silt and clay). Total Hg levels range from 1 to 316 ng g-1, being signifi- cantly different depending on aggregate size (F=8.110, p=0.000), with greater HgT values in the smaller aggre- gates (clay and fine silt). Total Hg levels in soil aggregates are strongly correlated to organic matter (r=0.728, p=0.000) and Al and Fe compounds (r=0.900, p=0.000), suggesting the strong affinity of HgT with these soil com- pounds and their potential role in the Hg mobilization and its enrichment in illuvial horizons.
