Abstract
The textile and clothing sector is undergoing a process of trade liberalization since the approval of the Agreement on Textile and Clothing (ATC). This agreement, which came into effect in 1995, establishes that the whole abolition of quotas to import will be complete in January of 2005. Our study reveals certain fragility of the Spanish sector to deal with the new international framework. The recent effort of modernization and adaptation to the new circumstances by means of quality and design, which is more evident in the clothing sector, has not avoided the sector to shaw an unclear evolution in the first years of the new century.
