Resumo

The purpose of this study is to know the impact that divorce of parents can have on the stability of the relationships of the children. We also study how the variable gender of the children affects. Through a quasi-experimental design, a total of 393 families composed of couples with children in common were evaluated. Through an ad hoc questionnaire, information was obtained on their current and parental relationship. It was found that 267 (67.94%) maintained a relationship and 126 (32.06%) had ceased their relationship. In 34 cases (8.7%) at least one of the members had experienced the rupture of their parents, compared to 359 (91.3%) who had not experienced it. Data analysis revealed significant differences in partner rupture (χ 2 =16.54, p < .001), showing a three times greater likelihood of partner rupture when the parent had ruptured previously. Depending on gender, there was a variability in the probability of rupture, being twice as high in men (10.9%), and up to four times higher in women (19.9%). Results are in line with the phenomenon known as Intergenerational Transmission of Divorce (ITD), a potentiating effect of the second generation couple rupture, due to the previous experience of divorce of the parents. In line with the above, it is necessary to deepen this relationship, controlling the effects of other possible influences such as the level of parental conflict, the stress experienced in childhood and the way in which the co-parenting has been exercised.
