Abstract

The present investigation has the purpose to evaluate the parental break up consequences in the socioeconomic level in families with children. A total of 100 families with children who experienced the parental break up were evaluated with a quasi experimntal design. The children aged between 6 and 12 years (M= 8.62; SD=2.10). The information was obtained from a semi-structured interview. The results shown a negative impact in the economic situation (Z= -4.120; p= 0.001) and family income (Z= -6.881; p= 0.001). An exacerbation of the consequences in the economic situation (Z= -2.070; p= 0.038) and income (Z= -3.918; p=0.001) were found in families from a contentious process. In the light of evidences, parental break up impact in family economic situation and increases the risk of poverty. Therefore socioeconomic consequences of parental rupture must be considered to develop economic and sanitary politics, and to provide alternative dispute resolutions mechanisms witch reduce the litigation, and the emotional, time and economic cost of the parental relationship termination for the family.
