Abstract

Backgrounds. The geographical dispersion is one of the main characteristics of the district of Verín (Galicia). Children attending primary school have to shift an average distance of 15.47 km and those attending secondary school have to travel almost the double (28.58 km). Methodology. The goal of this research is to determine the extent to which distance implies a significant variable in relation to the school expectations, and to analyse the structural elements coming into play. All students attending the 4th class in all district schools (four) were inquired (n= 131). Results. The data show that the sample does not perceive the fact of having to scroll as a major problem. However the students who perceived the distance to school as a problem are: female, living in hamlets, attending public schools, repeater, with worse academic results, and with low educational motivation. They also consider that the distance to upper educational centres is bigger that other students. Conclusions. Distance to school is a variable linked to the students' school expectations, mainly among students coming from rural areas.
