Abstract
The present study deals with the acquisition and development of language in a child (from 2;6 to 4;6 years old) who had been abused from birth up to the age of two. The childs language was recorded in a natural context at monthly intervals, each session lasting 30 mins. Language production was analysed from three levels: Syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic. It was then compared with the expressive language of a child with normal development to assess the subjects language development. From the results, it is concluded that external factors, mainly those aspects related to caretakerinfant interaction patterns, are essential for the correct acquisition and development of language. Furthermore, delays in this area are difficult to overcome.
