Resum

This articleis given over to the economic analysis of the decision that leads commpanies to undertake R&D spending. We set forth a simple model explaining the decision to invest together with the size of the investment when thedecision is favourable, and we explain the results obtained in their estimation with macroeconomic company data. These results confirm the existence of cost effectiveness thresholds and "barriers to innovation", which are only surmounted by part of the companies. The model is also used to discuss the impact of public incentives for R&D, suppluying some empirical data on R&D grants to companies in the nineties.
