Abstract

This article is a description of a framework intended to understand metamemory research. There are two aspects in metamemory, called monitoring and control. A distinction is drawn between prospective monitoring (judgment about subsequent responding) and retrospective monitoring (confidence judgement about a previous recall response). Prospective monitoring is subdivided further into three categories: Ease of learning (EOL) in advance of acquisition; Judgements of learning (JOL) and Feeling of knowing (FOK) during or after acquisition. The Confidence judgement occurs after the recall. The notion underlying control is that the information flowing from monitoring could initiate, continue or terminate an action during learning (e.g. allocation of study time
