Abstract
This article is a description of a framework intended to understand metamemory research. There are two aspects in metamemory, called monitoring and control. A distinction is drawn between prospective monitoring (judgment about subsequent responding) and retrospective monitoring (confidence judgement about a previous recall response). Prospective monitoring is subdivided further into three categories: Ease of learning (EOL) in advance of acquisition; Judgements of learning (JOL) and Feeling of knowing (FOK) during or after acquisition. The Confidence judgement occurs after the recall.
