Abstract

This work forms the basis for a case study whose main objective is that of investigating the postoperative pain symptoms in patients recovering from thoracic surgery. Participants in this study utilized transcutaneous electric nervous stimulation (TENS) as a form of postoperative analgesic. The sample was made up of five postoperative thoracic surgery patients - three males, averaging 39 years old, and two females averaging 45 years old. Evaluation of the pain was made through the use of a numeric scale and the McGill questionnaire. Pain evaluation in this study was proceeded by apreoperative evaluation, using a surgical and postoperative accompaniment, with the TENS application accompanied with the use of a physical therapy pain intervention and reassessment. Results from this study indicate that the TENS was efficient in the reduction of the pain symptoms present in patients in this study.
