Abstract
In this article I present a description of the sociolinguistic study of the Galician language in Galicia that encompasses diachronic and synchronic contexts. Regarding the diachronic dimension, I analyse on the one hand the beginning of the process of social substitution of Galician by Castilian and, on the other, the emergence of a linguistic ideology favourable to the social and culture recuperation of the Galician language. Concerning the synchronic dimension, I will contextualise the process of institutionalisation and governmental language policy that has been developed in Galician from the 1980s following the political alterations that came about with the change in the Spanish political system following the death of Franco, the establishment of the constitution in 1978 and the introduction of autonomous government for the historical nations of Spain. The linguistic framework established in Galicia and the linguistic policies favourable to the growth of Galician had an impact on Galician society. Analysing this impact can help us visualise certain sociolinguistic trends in the future of the language.
