Resumo

This paper surveys water beetle fauna in rivers located in the southwest of the province of Ourense (Spain), during the years 2001 and 2002. The sampling was performed at 20 points distributed in the rivers Deva, Tuño, Fragoso and Cadós. We studied 24,931 specimens of 47 species of Coleoptera belonging to three families of Adephaga and eight families of Polyphaga. The families Hydraenidae and Elmidae showed the highest richness, with 14 and 15 species, respectively. We observed different speciesdistribution patterns according to the strech of river, altitude and substrate. In addition, Limnebius evanescens Kiesenwetter, 1866 is a new record for Galica. The biogeographical analysis of species in the study area indicates that endemic species are dominant (43%), followed by Trans-Iberian (30%), Northern (25%) and finally, Southern (2%) species
