Abstract

Our aim is for the study to bring us closer to the occupations by Galicians in the city of Buenos Aires in the first third of the 20th century, using the ethnic community press of Buenos Aires as the main source, especially the commercial advertisements that were published. The article focuses on three fundamental aspects: the occupation of Galicians in Argentina, their access to the labour market and their residential patterns. Through these elements, we can confirm significant Galician participation in the activities related to small-scale trade, with a predominance of businesses dedicated to textiles, leather and by-products. Businesses dedicated to the catering industry and foodstuffs, as well as the hotel industry were also run by Galicians. With regard to the River Plate city, we also found a notable preference for certain quarters, which consequently became places where not only contact could be made with fellow countrymen and women, but also where news could be heard about the parish of origin, as well as where the first microsocieties of instruction were formed.
