Purpose: Galicia has the highest incidence of tuberculosis in Spain. We determined trends and economic costs for this illnesrelated hospitalizations during the period 1996-2007. Methods. Tuberculosis specifically Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) from the Minimal Set Database of Servicio Galego de Saúde (SERGAS) were considered (DRG 705, 709 and 711: tuberculosis and HIV infection, 808 and 809 (tuberculosis with and without complications). Costs were calculated multiplying the number of cases in each GDR by its average cost as supplied by SERGAS. Results. During this period a striking decrease in the number of notified cases (53%), hospitalized cases (58%), concomitant tuberculosis-HIV cases (75%) and tuberculosis-related deaths (58%) was noted. There were a reduction of costs from 4,4 millions (1999)(0,42% of the specialized assistance budget) to 2,9 millions (2007)(0,15%). It was calculated a global cost for hospitalized tuberculosis in Galicia of 3,8 millions (0,11 % of global public health budget in 2007). Conclusions. Although during a 12-year period a marked decrease in hospitalizations and mortality for tuberculosis was observed, tuberculosis still represents a considerable economic and health burden in Galicia.
