Abstract
Educational Modelling Languages (EMLs) have been proposed to support the instructional design of e-learning materials. These languages were developed as part of the e-learning standardization movement to enable the description of educational materials in a reusable and interoperable way. Previous Learning Object specifications are centred on the packaging of educational materials as reusable building blocks and do not consider the way in which instruction or teaching have to be carried out. EMLs are concerned with educational materials, but they also consider the way in which learners use contents, the interaction among participants (other learners and academic staff), etc. Currently, IMS Learning Design (LD) is the most outstanding EML proposal. This paper considers three main concerns that should be considered in EMLs and presents a proposal to enhance e-learning instructional design.
