Resumo

Triathlon is a sport that comprises the disciplines swimming cycling and running. There are multiple distances as the standard (1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run) or sprint (0,75km swim, 20km bike, 5km run). The purpose of this study was to identify factors that determine a triathlete comes to reach maximum performance in this sport, and secondly which of these factors may be relevant for inclusion in a talent identifi cation program. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to determine which factors are most infl uential performance in the competition. The results of papers indicate that the physiological characteristics of the triathlete are fundamental. VO2max values are similar to those of other endurance athletes, however, triathletes seem to have a greater ability to maintain an intensity corresponding to the anaerobic threshold for longer periods of time than in other sports, probably due to changing patterns of movement. This movement patterns of triathletes show differences when performing each of the separate sports, especially running, something that should be taken into account in training. The anthropometric characteristics indicate a low fat percentage and long limbs, and fi nally we note that the strategy adopted by athletes, in swimming and cycling specially, is relevant in the outcome of the competition.
