Abstract

Regional research networks have an important role in the creation of scientific knowledge and innovation, key activities in modern economic reality. This paper analyzes the expectations of re-search groups, and explores the impact of governance on performance research networks, through an analysis that includes data from 11 public research networks, comprising 83 research groups in Galicia. Research shows that networks fulfill the expectations of the participating groups, especially in terms of results, and also discover that governance factors are positively associated with performance. The findings highlight the need to promote strong ties among the research groups in the network, the development of equity arrangements, and the definition of network evaluation mecha-nisms. Furthermore other factors that negatively influence the network performance were identified, such as the excessive centralization and intermediation of some research groups.
