Abstract

Introduction Stroke is nowadays a serious health problem, because its treatment is long and expensive, and its prevalence is high and tends to increase in the future. In recent years there have been new lines of treatment, including mirror therapy. The aim of this review is to analyze the effects of mirror therapy in stroke patients. Development A literature review was conducted between January and June 2013 in MEDLINE, Scopus and WOS databases and PubMed. «Stroke» and «mirror therapy» have been used as search terms. After applying the established selection criteria (clinical trials published between 2008 and 2013 that deal with mirror therapy in patients with stroke using the reflection of their unaffected limb) we have obtained 15 valid studies for review. Conclusions mirror therapy seems to have positive effects in stroke patients, especially in motor recovery and pain.
