Resumo

There are many psychological aspects involved in athletic performance, with varying degrees of influence on the activity of the athletes. The object of this investigation is to prove whether the subjects who have a higher level of self-efficacy towards physical activity and higher selfesteem levels achieve better athletic performance. This research was conducted among members of the Galician and Spanish Judo and Associated Sports Federations, aged between 14 and 39 years old. This is a descriptive-interpretive research with a quasi-experimental, cross-sectional design, in which student’s t-test and the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient are used in order to compare between different variables. Findings suggest significant differences between self-efficacy and self-esteem levels by age and gender. Likewise, it has been proved the existence of a positive correlation between self-efficacy and athletic performance and a positive correlation between self-esteem and athletic performance, indicating that the higher the self-efficacy and self-esteem, the better the sport outcomes are. These results suggest the need of taking care of psychological and motivational aspects in the field of high performance of Judo athletes.
