Abstract

Since its immersion in the European Higher Education Area, the university has been in the pursuit of the incorporation of Information Technology (IT) to the teaching, allowing the students to access the notes, exercises and material used in class. Also, they would be able to access other resources that complement teachers’ explanations and offer the chance to apply the new concepts. The present article analyses the pilot experience carried out in the grades of Mineral and Energetic Resources Engineering and Energy Engineering of the University of Vigo, in the first year subject of Geology. TEMA platform was used to develop an application about the identification of minerals and rocks, since the students showed a lack of experience in the last years. The results of the pilot experience were very positive in general, decreasing the number of fails and obtaining slightly higher marks than the year before. It has been proved that virtual tools can be profitable for studying a subject, applying what has been learnt in class and consolidating the new concepts in a pleasant way.
