Abstract

When finishing any Engineering studies, students must submit a Final Degree Project which provides them, in most cases, with their very first contact with professional activities. Their lack of experience is in general the biggest obstacle undergraduates must overtake when facing a real project. With the Bologna process implementation, the application of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach becomes very interesting for technical studies. This paper summarizes the results obtained in the Final Degree Project by one Telecommunications Engineering student, who has developed an indoor navigation system based mainly on two encoders. The aforementioned project has contributed to the development of his bibliographic research skills and has led to a multidisciplinary collaboration with people from different knowledge areas. The limitations in budget and the deadlines set by the professors forced him to make decisions about which technology to choose or the maximum amount of time taken at each step. Our conclusions show that Project Based Learning activities can provide a valid complement to more conventional, theoretically-based, teaching methods. This example is shown as a PBL proposal for future engineers.
