Resumo

The most severe mass extinction o f the Phanerozoic occurred in the Permo-Triassic boundary. Atthe Western Peritethian domain (Iberian Peninsula, Southern France, Sardinia, Baleares Islandsand Northern Algeria) this boundary is placed within the Bundsandstein facies, whose firstdeposits started during the late Permian in comparison to Central Europe where its basecoincides just with the P/T boundary. The palaeobotanic record related to this catastrophicevent is studied here with the aim o f placing accurately the Palaeozoic-M esozoic boundarywithin the Buntsandstein facies. A palinostratigraphical scale was established in order to recognisethe boundary according to the bibliographic data and compare it afterwards with the field datao f this study. No Scythian record has been found at the whole studied region, although severalpalaeopalinological and palaeobotanical assemblages representing the Upper Permian as wellas the Anisian have been recovered. These results allow reducing the uncertainty interval for thePermo-Triassic boundary at the Peritethian domain
