Abstract

The Galician coast was under exceptionally high energy-wave conditions during the winter of 2001. The effect of this unusual situation was monitored in two surveys (november 2000 and february 2001) at Panxon beach. The main response was a decreasing slope of the beach profiles from november to february. However, it was possible identify two different behaviour between the exposed and protected zones of the beach. The profiles localized behind a seawall, with lesser incident energy, reach a milder slope acumulating sand in the low and intermediate intertidal zone. The sand was removilized along the total intertidal profile in the exposed beach zones. The morphology and evolution ot each part of beach (exposed and protected) was controlled for different sediment transport pathways: cross-shore and longshore, respectively. Grain size variations along the beach support this interpretation. A preliminary hydrodynamical study allowed to determined the energy distribution along the beach.
