Resumo
This article aims to analyse in some depth the different problems concerning public space in four Latin American metropolitan zones, from a perspective of spatial innovation as an instrument for municipal development. Although the examples of Bogota, Quito, Montevideo and Mexico City have different urban characteristics, they can be viewed in the common context of e.g. the availability and use of public spaces. In this connection the importance of territorial innovation processes for the solution of urban development problems is pointed out. Public space has a pivotal role where social and territorial aspects meet in unique manner. Public space can also be seen as an instrument of municipal transformation, e.g. with emphasis on interventions in lower and middle class quarters (Bogota) or as part of a comprehensive policy of municipal development (Quito). In the actual management of developmental measures, the importance of communal participation is shown (Montevideo) and the essentiality of a clear distribution of assignments between the different levels of public administration can be pointed out (Mexico City).
