Abstract

The objective of this thesis is the study of Foreign Banking (FB) installed in Spain. The main motivation of the same is the lack of existing academic literature on the subject, in contrast to the quantitative and qualitative importance of it, within the Spanish Banking System. The analysis is broken down by legal form, branches and subsidiaries, and in the so-called pre-crisis, 2008, and post-crisis periods. To do this, we begin by defining its typology, as well as its legal forms, and we make a brief historical tour since its entry into the 19th century. For its study, we proceed to the descriptive analysis and the business quota reached in the set of Deposit Entities. The lines of work addressed are broken down into three main parts, the first, studies the determinants by country of origin of the FB installed in Spain, the second, the location chosen for the development of its activity, and, the third, analyzes the degree of stability achieved within the Spanish Banking System throughout the sample period. The conclusions of the same indicate, in relation to the countries of origin, that the presence of the FB in Spain is positively correlated with the degree of commercial integration with the countries of origin of the entities, that the installation of subsidiaries is carried out mostly by developed countries and that the post-crisis period was not an impediment to the installation of branches. Regarding the provincial location of the FB, the objective of business search and profitability is the most influential variable in the decision for its installation, confirming the results the strong concentration of offices in the province of Madrid, and a lower relative weight for the Barcelona, in relation to its macroeconomic figures in the whole country.
