Resum

The main aim of our research was to undertake a retrospective study in order to find out how teaching of percussion instruments was addressed before becoming part of the Galician Government conservatories’ curriculum and what the training of those students who chose to play these kind of instruments was like. Due to its descriptive nature we followed a qualitative method using semi structured interviews within a purposive sample of subjects with long experience and high reputation, in order to get a deeper understanding and comprehension of our subject matter. Results, besides showing that the choice of percussion instruments was initially determined by the needs of the bands, suggest that musical initiation was influenced by relatives or neighbours who were musicians. Percussion training was done through private lessons where, despite having some method books, teaching was mainly practical, by imitation and based on the bands or music groups repertoire
