This paper presents sedimentological, biogeochemical and planktonic foraminifera data from core SMP02-3, which was recovered from the Calician continental shelf as part of a comprehensive investigation of the paleoenvironmental history of this area. The data span the period of the Late Holocene (ca. 4,600 BP). Variations in relative abundance of selected planktonic foraminifera along with biogeochemical and sedimentological characteristics of the core show three periods. Period 3 is characterised by high productivity conditions and strong seasonality with vertical mixing of the water column in winter and warming and stratification of surface waters in summer. During period 2 stratification conditions and a deep chlorophyll maximum are established in the water column. A return to productive conditions is registered during period I, probably related to upwelling conditions.
