Resumo

Benthic foraminifera assemblages and oxygen and carbon stable isotopes have been employed as paleoceanography and paleoclimatolgy proxies in order to reconstruct the Holocene environmental evolution of the Ría de Muros (NW Spain). Recorded changes let us to distinguish 4 periods: from 8200 to 7600 cal. BP is a period of low sea level with oxygenated', and relatively warm andlow-salinity waters. From 7600 to 5000 cal. BP the sea level rose and the outer ria become a productive full-marine environment. Between 5000 and 2700 cal. BP important changes took place. At 4000 cal. BP the ria suffered an incursion of warmer or less saline, nutrient-rich waters and newspecies emerged. At 3300 cal. BP a short event of low productivity and high oxygen content isrecorded, giving way to a stage of high environmental instability. During the most recent period (2700 cal. BP to nowadays) relatively warm and wet, and colder and less rainy phases alternated.
