Resumo
Problem Based Learning (PBL), especially when supported by Virtual Learning Environments (VLE), has been demonstrated to successfully develop personal, social and technical competencies. This paper collects and synthesizes exemplary cases and contextualizes the use of urban simulators as a VLE to support PBL in Engineering in order to allow a precise environment specification for the eCity platform. The main objective of the eCity project was to develop a citydevelopment simulation engine and a pedagogical methodology that stimulates the integration and continuous exploitation of PBL in Engineering Education and promotes technological vocations in secondary school students. The paper introduces some of the engineering problems considered for the eCity development and specifies the pedagogical methodology adopted.
