Abstract

Eponyms constitute a particularly frequent recourse in concept designation in the field of medicine and allied sciences. This phenomenon, which is in fact as usual as it is old, is also fairly unpopular, especially amongst translators. This attitude of rejection against the use of eponyms is mainly due to their lack of transparency and consistency. This study aims to address the key features of eponyms and the most significant difficulties for their adequate use. For this purpose, we have analysed a corpus of texts in French and Spanish in a field where they are very commonly used: the area of rare diseases. We therefore intend to decipher the mechanisms used for their creation in both languages and the strategies that the specialised translator should follow for a correct linguistic transfer.
