Abstract

A multiproxy analysis of six gravity cores retrieved along an E-W transect of the Galicia Inner Basin was carried out with the aim of reconstructing the sedimentary and paleoceanographic evolution of this basin during the last 70 kyr. Sedimentation is higher during glacial periods, especially during extreme cold events (Heinrich Events), while periods like the Holocene are characterized by much lower sedimentation rates. Hemipelagic sedimentation prevailed during the glaciation on the central part of the basin, whereas strengthened northward bottom currents bathing the lower continental slope developed a contourite body.
