Abstract

Tbis paper read at the IV ATG Conference held at the University ofVigo explores the linguistic ideologies wbich guide the practice, academic teaching and social dynamics ofTranslation in Galicia. To this aim, the first five issues of Viceversa, the ATG journal published by, are subjected to decon-struction and criticism. The purpose is to analyze the theoretical tenets which underpin the linguistic and cultural process oftranslation into Galician, particu-larly the effects derived from mimesis of inadequate national models. The author proposes that the debate on scientific translation and language nom1alization in Galicia is reinstated into the more general discussion about translation and cultures, defending that (1) translation from more diverse languages should be promoted; (2) that good translations and critica! reviewing should be given priority against "massive translation"; and (3) that diglossia should be restructured in order that scientific translation into Galician focuses on popular and practica! scientific texts rather than on high or elitist science, a field of activity for which scientific English is already ve1y well-equiped.
