Abstract

The explicitation hypothesis postulates an observed cohesive explicit-ness from SL to TL te xts regardless of the increase traceable to differences between the two linguistic and textual systems involved (Blum-Kulka, 1986; Baker, 1896). Nevertheless, both the analysis of the bilingual English-Galician corpus TECTRA and the data from other adjacent disciplines such as Contrastive Rethorics or Textual Linguistics seem to indicate that explici-tation is not a constant factor in ali translations and, moreover, that it is not exclusive to this kind of process. lt is necessary, therefore, to reformulate the definition of explicitation and regard it as a mere tendency of ali communica-tion process. Blum-Kulka herself acknowledges that there are instances of explicitation that are due to the different stylistic preferences of languages, which means that \arge-scale empírica! studies are needed to validate either or both the stylistic preference and the explicitation.
