Abstract

This article deals with the regional differences in social capital and their importance for the functioning of Spanish institutions and economic development. It focuses on the coherence that social capital finds with liberal institutions and its role in the uneven development of the regions. Currently, those regions with a greater presence of social capital elicit a better economic performance. The article evaluates from different perspectives the causal direction and the mechanisms of this relationship and shows that this coherence between institutions and social capital had a relevant role in the historical trajectory of the Spanish regional economic distribution
