Abstract

The process of disinfection of drinking water has both physical and chemical stages. Chlorine and ozone are the chemicals most widely used. Despite the benefits of these or other disinfectants (such as chlorine dioxide and chloramines), disinfection by-products (DBPs) are formed due to the interaction of the disinfectants with natural organic matter in water. A large number of DBPs have been identified, with a wide range of chemical structures and properties. The presence of DBPs in drinking water is a matter of concern for human health, and they may also have an unpleasant taste. It is therefore desirable to reduce the presence of DBPs in drinking water.
