Resumo

Objective: to evaluate the relationship between allergic rhinitis patients’ symptoms, their sociodemographic characteristics, the atmospheric pollinic concentration and the decision of treatment. Design: observational prospective research. Setting: urban primary health care center, faculty of science. Participants: 18-65 years old allergic rhinitis patients. Main measurements: age, sex and clinical variables (subjective intensity symptoms, Gramineae allergic antecedents, use of antihistaminic, asthma antecedents, immunotherapy treatment and smoking habit). Results: 35 patients were included, 65,7% women. Overage age 42 years old. 31,4% are asthmatic and 51,4% were treated with immunotherapy. Symptoms were more frequent between March and July; severe symptoms were predominant in April. Gramineae allergic patients had in October another peak. No relationship was found between the intensity of symptoms and the use of antihistaminic. Conclusions: most severe symptoms are concentrated in with the highest pollination season in our region, presenting symptoms at other times probably due to cross-reactivity with other allergens. Health education will play an important role in optimizing symptomatic treatment in these patients
