Resumo

This paper is based on the premise that knowledge of the history of the teaching and learning of foreign languages leads to better training for language teachers. With the aim of providing guidance for those who are new to the study of foreign languages in history, it offers a representative sample of specialised historiographical works which, although illustratively presented in the context of the history of German as a foreign language (GaFL), also allow learning about other languages, as in the case of Spanish, which is treated in a preferential way in many examples. The focus is set on the following four types of works: general histories of foreign language teaching, particular histories —with or without a focus on the history of GaFL—, repertories of works and authors, and other shorter studies.
