Abstract

This paper's aim is to contribute to spreading the knowledge of the Galician lugsail and its rigging. It is fairly common for ethnographic studies to describe elements that have remained close to the old stages of a specific evolutive process through the ages. We think this could be the case of the Galician lugsail, which is somewhat archaic in comparison to the common lugsail and lugger sail, to which group it clearly belongs. In the conservative traditional Galician society, the lugsail would survive as a witness of a process that would generate, especially during the 19th century, more modern riggings in other European regions.
