Abstract

In this work, we present mixtures of two protic ionic liquids, ethylammonium nitrate and propylammonium nitrate, with small amounts of water or nitrate salts with the metal cations of lithium, calcium, magnesium and aluminium. These mixtures were characterized, both physically and electrochemically, in order to provide information for their future use as possible electrolytes. At the same time, this work deepened in the study of the aprotic ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium octylsulfate and its mixtures at 20 %w/w of water, one without the addition of magnesium sulfate and the other saturated. These two mixtures, published by the research group, form gels at room temperature, which provides added value. The results obtained for the proposed electrolytes show clear trends for the different physical properties: density, viscosity, electrical conductivity, refractive index and surface tension. These trends can be described depending on the temperature, the content of the added substance or the metal cation characteristics. On the other hand, the electrochemical study by voltammetry focused on the electrochemical potential windows, where the mixtures with magnesium and aluminium nitrate salts and the influence of water on the imidazolium compound stand out.
