Abstract

Aquaculture is a constantly growing productive sector at a global level, based both on traditional structures and techniques and on new processes that incorporate a variety of scientific-technical innovations. In this process, some sustainability problems arise, chose management is conditioned by environmental factors (those derived from the processes but also of global scope) and by institutional factors (with specific nuances in each scenario). In this chapter, these factors are analysed for the case of Galicia, focusing in three processes: traditional shellfishing, floating raft culture, and fish aquaculture, with clearly different results and characteristics. The key points of the study are in the characterization and discussion of the decisions that affect the resource and governance systems, paying attention to the importance of innovations and the impacts of globalization, insofar as they affect institutional dynamics and business strategies.
