Abstract

Computed tomography (CT-scan) has a great potential for geological applications allowing to identify as a non-destructive methodology characteristics of the sediment as texture, grain-size, composition, sedimentary structures and physical proper- ties as density, water content, etc. The numerical processing of the raw data using specific software can be considered as a sedimentary analysis tool by itself, and as a tool to improve the more subjective analysis of the tomographic images of the sediment. The facies changes are usually associated with density changes that can be detected by means of the CT-scan, and their distribution can be statistically characterized. The statistical identification, characterization and quantification of this density variations, and hence, of the sedimentary facies, is the main objective of roFac. The sedimentary infill of the Galicia Interior Basin records the deep-ocean typical facies: pelagic, hemipelagic, turbitic and contouritic. The use of roFac for tomographic data from the sedimentary records of this basin allow us to distinguish on the basis of statistical parameters the main facies and to stablish a preliminary tomographic catalogue. The use of this facies identification technique, before the opening of the cores, present a great utility to plan other kind of analyses in other areas and to correlate cores.
