Abstract

Nocturnin is a deadenylase involved in post transcriptional regulation of the expression of some genes. Therelationship between nocturnin (noc) expression and feeding has been investigated in goldfish. With thisgoal, we carried out three experimental approaches. Firstly, a periprandial profile of nocturnin expressionwas performed. It was shown that after feeding the nocturnin levels were either increased or decreaseddepending on the type of nocturnin (a or b). Secondly, the effect of fasting was studied by exposing fish toshort fasting (7 days) and long fasting (30 days). The results show that fasting has opposite effects on noc-aand noc-b expression. Finally, we have test in which we subjected two groups of fish to 48 hours fasting, after this period one of them was fed back while the other continued under fasting conditions. We observedthat in the group that was not re-fed the expression of noc-a decreased while in noc-b increased. Therefore, this study shows that feeding regulates nocturnin expression in goldfish.
