Resumen
Reading comprehension is a complex process that requires the knowledge of several abilities including knowing the sounds of letters, decoding words and pseudowords, and understanding the syntax of a sentence, in a process that develops throughout primary education. The present investigation examined the relationship between said abilities and reading comprehension in a sample of 229 Spanish schoolers from grades 3rd to 4th of primary school. Our results show that, while there is a significate correlation between letter and syntactic structures recognition, due to the process of automatization in word reading that occurs in 3rd and 4th grade, pseudowords reading and text comprehension are not correlated in said grades. In addition, it is worth noting the low scores obtained by third graders in the recognitionof grammatical structures, which might be an indicator of problems in the syntactic component that can affect reading comprehension.
