Abstract

Trafficking and exploitation of family children were channels for financing the poor families of Roman civilization. On other occasions, they served to fill the wealth and greed of many parents. In a contradictory way, mercenary contracts and deliveries of children in slavery were combated and allowed, for reasons of necessity and economic crisis, by the legislation of the emperors. With the fall of the Western Roman Empire, child trafficking continued in Visigoth Hispania and the Late Middle Ages. The Hispanic kings adopted the legislation of the Lower Empire, compiled by Teodosiano Code (bridge between Rome and the Middle Ages), to try to deal, along with the Church councils, with trafficking and family businesses with minors.
