In Madrid, throughout the first half of the 20th Century, diorite was used for kerbstones and setts. This diorite was extracted from dykes located in the Sierra de Guadarrama (Spanish Central System). The texture of diorite is mainly micro-porphyric, hence it was known in the past as porphyry or lamprophyre. Other stone setts, which are currently used in paving restoration work, contain different varieties of granite with equigranular textures and grain sizes ranging from fine to medium. Samples of microdiorite were studied from dykes in Colmenar Viejo and La Pedriza in Manzares, along with biotitic monzogranite from Zarzalejo (also known as ‘Blanco Rafaela’ Granite), and aplitic leucogranite found in historic paving around Madrid. The samples were characterised in accordance with European standards for paving setts (UNE- EN 1342: 2003). The results revealed a wide range of values in the compressive strength of the rocks studied. Diorite displayed the greatest resistance to abrasion, followed by aplitic leucogranite. The slip resistance was determine with a sawn finish The highest slip resistance values were found in granite. Diorite suffered the least damage in the freeze-thaw cycles. In conclusion, the rocks analysed clearly meet the requirements of European standards for high-performance paving.
