Abstract

In this piece, we make an overview of the evolution of the adjective cunqueiriano in Galician fiction prose writing from the 1970s to the present. The influence of the great writer from Mondoñedo goes through several stages: The identification with magical realism in the 1980s, as a way to create a national allegory that allows one to represent an irrepresentable past; the appropriation of historical memory through ethnographic research, in the 1990s; or extreme fidelity in the hypertextual reproduction of narrative strategies and style in the noughties. Finally, it is suggested that there is nowadays a vague use of the adjective cunqueiriano, referring to a writer who is mentioned both as a model of an author belonging to two literary traditions, featuring prominently in Spanish journalism, and as a key figure, torn from the national tradition, in the literary formation of narrators from younger generations.
