Abstract

Introduction: Part of the sports practice in Spain is articulated through sports entities, which not only attend to competitive sports, but have expanded to leisure sports. Their budgets depend on local administrations. Subsidies to sports entities are included in an action of promotion that implies a social improvement of the following aspects: improvement of public health through physical activity, optimization of the role of sport in education and training, use of the potential of sport for social inclusion, integration and equal opportunities. Objective: The objective of this research was to categorize the criteria for awarding sports subsidies in the municipal administration. Method: We analyzed the criteria for awarding sports subsidies in the 37 selected municipalities. To perform the content analysis of the documents, 22 record units were identified, grouped into 4 factors: sports, economic, organizational and social. Conclusions: The regulatory bases for subsidies in municipalities with a smaller number of inhabitants present a greater number of items, in the award criteria, to calculate the amount of budget credit allocated to each third party (sports entity). The sports factor is the one with the highest number of items. The social, economic and organizational factors have similar averages.
